Autodesk gives StrongARM-based Compaq iPAQS to its sales force.

Maybe the iPAQ will gain significant market share now that PALM has indicated its Palm Pilot Business is in a swan dive.

LAS VEGAS, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Autodesk, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADSK), the leading provider of design software and digital content creation tools, today announced that it will provide 2,500 Compaq iPAQ(TM) Pocket PC handhelds to its worldwide sales force and channel partners. Tools To Enhance Customer Service

The iPAQ Pocket PCs are powerful business tools that enable Autodesk's channel partners and global sales force to obtain relevant information from Autodesk's AutoAccess Online extranet. Information transferred to the iPAQ Pocket PC will facilitate improved responses to customer queries during sales meetings. The iPAQ Pocket PC's processor and memory capabilities will allow the sales team to transport sales tools, including contact lists, white papers, frequently asked questions and brochures. With optional wireless capabilities, channel partners can generate reports and place orders from the field.

"Our channel partners have always been critical in helping Autodesk bring our software solutions to market," said Ray Piontek, Autodesk's vice president of U.S. channel sales. "We want to provide our channel partners and sales force with the technology and real-time information that will allow them to be as successful and efficient as possible."

"Our vision is to eventually provide sales information in a completely wireless environment," added Piontek. "When our initiative is fully implemented, these iPAQ Pocket PCs will be the primary tool for business communications between Autodesk and our resellers."

According to reseller Richard Neiman with CADD Centers of Florida, "The key is professionalism and giving the client timely data. When we are at an account and there is something we have discovered via Autodesk's AutoAccess, we will be able to show or print it directly at the customer's office. This enables greater customer service and better time management."

Relationships with technology leaders Compaq Computer Corporation, Microsoft, Intel and Brience are helping Autodesk put mobile technology into the field. The Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs, Microsoft Windows(R) Powered Pocket PC operating system and Intel(R) StrongARM chip make the iPAQ Pocket PC a true business tool for the field. Brience provided a solution that repurposes the AutoAccess online web content for viewing on the smaller screen.
