My biggest worry is implicit in a quote from this morning's Wall Street Journal:

The harsh reality is that if the country really is in the middle of a sharp slump, there is little any president can do in the short run. But as Mr. Bush knows from his father's experience, there's a huge political cost in appearing not to try.

IMO, the best solution is for the government to stay out of the way. Unfortunately, I think that if we start to see signs of a true recession rather than just a slowdown, President Bush is going to panic and try to come up with solutions that will only make the situation worse. And this is where having a Treasury Secretary with zero capital markets experience will really hurt.
