I agree, it would be nice to see some controls put in place.

But, failing that, I wish the current system had been left alone. Eventually, the banks would have suffered losses due to extending credit lines to people who aren't likely to be able to repay them. Suffering those losses, the banks would have eventually been forced to stop offering credit to such people.

In short, I think the problem would have worked itself out if the current system had been left in place. Unfortunately, lenders can buy whatever laws they like, so we get the mess that just moved through congress.
