The last few posts, from Caxton on, are among the most interesting in some time. Prompts me to add 2 cents.

The GSM crowd was clearly led by manufacturers, whose whose job (tax) creating successes were like a prayer answered, to the ears of the welfare-state pols of Europe. EU was struggling to achieve its #1 goal of being able to compete with the U.S. and Asia. Above all else, therefore, the pols bought into the notion that they could assure a European future control of telecommunications if they supported the cartel 100%. Only in so doing could they prevent Europe from being stuck with another MSFT or INTC, and being swamped by lower Asian labor costs.

This led the sheep willingly to the auctions of 2000, while sweeping VOD's Newbury CDMA overlay trials of 1998 under the rug.

One area of uncertainty in my mind is VOD's strategy, which must be based in part on their superior financial strength. Are they paying lip service to the EU vision while preparing to dominate Europe and the world after they pick up a lot more pieces on the cheap? This would explain their running up the auction prices and their most recent ingenuous flap with VZ.

It's been a fascinating experience, and the end game cometh.
