In January 1998 they made the decision that their future was dependent on W-CDMA ... actually ETSI made it the previous year when they accepted the Ericsson/DoCoMo proposal for Wideband CDMA as the primary mode of operation in UTRA. It was a good day to buy QUALCOMM. << Slander is slander, and their man Eckersly uttered same. Was he directed to do that, or was he on his own? >> I Thought that I already responded to that exact question, Chaz:Message 15568561 << In a company you have explained is as well and tightly managed as Nokia, the latter is incredible. >> So was Sulpizio's presentation to BoA. No let me correct that ... it was incredible but it was not at all credible. I, however, was incredulous at the overall approach and misuse and abuse of facts in that presentation, and I have commented on it here and elsewhere. I have also commented here before on the Doctor's Jacobs' presentations at Goldman, Sachs Internet Conference and the Deutsche Banc Alex Brown 2000 Technology Conference in November, that kicked off the 1xEV "marketing campaign" based on FUD & Hype orchestrated by the renowned marketeer Dr. Mark Irwin Jacobs. FUD is a legitimate business tactic. I happen to question if QUALCOMM is sophisticated enough to incorporate it into a marketing campaign, and when you combine transparent FUD with transparent HYPE, you have an explosive mixture, that can backfire. As you know, I have taken down my QUALCOMM position almost 30% in recent months. Part of this was for portfolio balancing, but it is also because I think their current tactics are long term detrimental to the corporation, and to shareholder value, because they have, in my opinion, a low chance of success. As for Mr. Eckersly (a pretty minor player in the Nokia scheme of things ... 2 of his seniors - SVP & President of NA Operations - both conducted press conferences at CTIA), I suspect he has some explaining to do to Nokia management, about how he got suckered into being quoted and paraphrased in never responsible Lynette's "Hatchet Job" which if I recall correctly was how you referred to the FT article that resulted from Irwin's London lunch, the repercussions of which immediately knocked 20% off the valuation of QUALCOMM If Mr. Eckersly was my report, he would most certainly have some explaining to do ... but as for "slander" ... not so sure .... I would say however, that any company that resurrects a 'Holy War', sets out to "slander" a competitive technology that they benefit from, misrepresent its characteristics in whitepaper and slides, best be one macho gander when the geese get riled. In this case, maybe we had a little gosling feel like his feathers got ruffled. Still can't figure out what his role was in a press conference Lynnette attempted to sensationalize in the interest of "journalism", what the subject matter of that conference was, what the context of his quoted remark was, and the paraphrased ones were. - Eric -
