13:16 ET BEA Systems (BEAS) 28 7/16 -5 5/16 (-15.7%): Commenting on Sun Micro (SUNW) decision to bundle its application server into the Solaris operating system, SG Cowen says this is the most aggressive marketing move Sun has made in this market segment in a long time. While the Sun application server is technically inferior to BEA, feels this move will make investors nervous in the short-term on BEA.




13:00 ET Microsoft (MSFT) 57 1/16 -1 3/16 (-2%): Japanese business paper Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports that company and NTT are collaborating to develop high-speed services for the Xbox video game console.... Report is being viewed as a positive datapoint for MSFT.




12:42 ET Check Point Sftwr (CHKP) 52 3/8 -5 11/16 (-9.8%): -- Technical -- Traders have been playing the trading range game for the last seven sessions with the bottom of this pattern (52-51 5/16) being tested once again amid above average volume. Intraday will watch resistance at 53 3/4 for an indication of the health of any recovery attempt. Failure to take this out leaves the door open to a bear breakout. Solid support comes into play at 48 1/2-47 1/2.

12:24 ET TECO Energy (TE) 27.59 +0.10 (+0.4%): -- Update -- Upgraded this morning at Robert W. Baird to STRONG BUY from MKT OUTPERFORM after company issued upward earnings guidance for Q1; firm views this as an attractive entry point given the strong earnings growth and outlook for 2001.




11:57 ET Openwave (OPWV) 20.18 -2.83 (-12.3%): Coming within range of pivotal support in the $20 area, which has proven a strong area for stock over the past week. Break here would set up stock for test of $19.20 one-year low.




11:50 ET CIENA Corp (CIEN) 47 9/16 -6 1/4 (-11.6%): -- Update -- Technical -- Failed to develop sufficient interest near the intraday floor at 48 in early trade and retested the March low (47). While this is still intact, gains back through 48 and then 49 are needed just to neutralize this morning's negative bias. Inability to accomplish this opens the door to fresh lows with initial support at 46 followed by the Mid-April low at 44 15/16.




11:49 ET Verizon Comms (VZ) 46.77 -3.34 (-6.7%): Company confirms Q1 and full yr guidance in 8-K filing with the SEC. Comments are a reiteration of guidance given at the CSFB Global Telecom Conference earlier this month.
