I find the newsworthiness of this hilarious. Tyson Surrenders Seat, Wins Round of Good Will Wednesday, March 28, 2001 Mike Tyson, contrary to popular belief, does have a softer side. The former heavyweight champion and a male assistant were on a recent flight to New York when they heard about a young coach passenger in a wheelchair. She was having difficulty getting to a lavatory in the rear of the aircraft. Tyson's assistant, who was seated with the boxer in first class, approached the woman and offered her his seat up front. When she said she didn't want to be separated from her husband, a young rabbinical student, Tyson's assistant responded, "That's okay. My friend will exchange seats with him so that you can sit together." The couple had no idea the friend was Tyson until the switch was made. Tyson's gesture so impressed Rabbi Harold Schulweis of Los Angeles that he wrote about the incident in the local Jewish Journal. "There is an important lesson to be learned from such an event," said Schulweis. "We have a tendency to either divinize or demonize our heroes. Either extreme is dangerously misleading. But it is important in a society which needs heroes to recognize the goodness of their character." A spokesman for Tyson could not be reached for comment.
