LOL, maybe he is stupid. But I don't think your respect is something he worries about.

Your mother is right, but again, it's all about time frames, too. If his return on capital time frame is 7 years to double his money, and he was there before the halving....well....he may get there again in 7 years. Right?

I'm sure he's upset that he lost the short term opportunity. But the nice thing about his outlook is that he's sticking to his time frame. When the time frame passes and he didn't achieve his goals, then he has the right to earn your lack of respect. However, I don't know what his goals are and neither do you.
So, I don't know if it's fair for you to make a judgement like that.
In fact, I don't know that it's fair to have disrespect for someone you don't know based solely on their portfolio performance.
He's a great guy, nice family man, works hard, and enjoys life. I'd say I respect him more now than I did when his portfolio was larger. Remember Rudyard Kipling's words about what it takes to be a man.....
