Both candidates ran well to the left of their true positions (something for all you righties to mull over). Gore was, if you look at his record, a centrist DLC Democrat; he ran as a populist. Bush didn't have that much of a record and he ran as a "compassionate conservative"; now in office he has shown himself a right-wing Republican.

My favorite Bush whopper was "I passed a Patient Bill of Rights in Texas". Yeah, he couldn't find the votes to sustain his second veto, that's what he really meant. Now of course, he opposes any Patient Bill of Rights. I don't call that truth in advertising.
