Well, we are entering an age of retrogression, which happens often. You must remember most Humans are just trained animals and their ability to think abstract is severely limited thus they want what they know. When the conservatives screw it all up again the people will vote for a another round of progress. In the end the rounds of progress tend to eke outs gains over the rounds or retrogression
