>In ancient times, when unexpected bad things happened (crops failing, wars, plague), people blamed the capricious Gods. Now, when ThingsGoWrong, we blame the Fed, the World Bank, or the IMF.<

Probably, if investors need to blame, the real culprits are the analysts and their fuzzy "metrics" maths recommending stocks with PEs>100. Investors and brokers depend on analysts, and if analysts are way wrong, then the market gets into a turmoil, like now.

>In 2001, they may only make 0.80. After that, earnings will jump back up to the previous trendline, maybe 1.40 in 2002<

TXN had a terrific earnings in 2000, $1.72 per share versus $0.83 in 1999. Looking at the income statement, seems to me something unusual happened in 2000.... non operating income was $2.3 billion, while operating income was also $2.3 billion. If 50% of eps was from non operating income ( unusual windfall) then 2001 may look pretty bad compared to 2000, especially with drastically slower demand for chips in 2001. $0.80 in 2001 and $1.40 for 2002 may be too high if only operating income is considered.
