I don't see why someone who follows Christ as a
worthy human example, could not call themselves a Christian.

People define themselves as being this or that. Most of these "clubs" have no membership committee. Political parties are a good example--anyone can call himself a Republican or a Democrat. People can call themselves conservatives or environmentalists or animal lovers or unionists or traditionalists or whatever. Some clubs have membership requirements. You can't call yourself a Jew or an American or a Dalmation unless you're accepted for membership. You can't call yourself a Catholic, a Baptist, or other Christian sect unless you've been baptized into it. But I don't know that there's a membership committee for Christian. Perhaps anyone can call himself one. It's like the racial identification on the census--you pick your own for whatever reason you like. There are some guidlines, but no membership committee.

I think Buddha and Christ are both worth emulating. I know that you know how far I am from being a Christian, but I have, on occasion when faced with a difficult ethical choice, asked myself the what-would-Jesus-do question as one of many ways of analyzing the matter. I think that Christ makes an excellent touchstone in our society. I can see how someone who makes Christ his primary touchstone could adopt the label, Christian, in good faith.

P.S. It would be a hoot if, all of a sudden, the gays started calling themselves Republicans.
