Vietnam telecom firm proposes new mobile network

HANOI, March 29 (Reuters) - State-run Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corp (VNPT) has submitted a proposal to the telecoms regulatory body to build a new $90 million mobile telephone network, official media reported on Thursday.

The Dau Tu (Investment) newspaper quoted an official at the Directorate-General of Posts and Telecommunications (DGPT) as saying part of the network would use GSM technology at a charge higher than landline telephones but lower than the nationwide mobile network.

Another part of the new network would utilise code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, and would later be linked to the GSM network, he said.

The paper said realisation would depend on the market but nationwide operation was targetted by 2005.

VNPT already controls Vietnam's two largest mobile networks, Vinaphone and VMS-Mobiphone. A third, run by state-run Saigon Telecommunications Co, covers the Ho Chi Minh City area.

The semi-private Saigon Posts and Telecommunications (Saigon Postel) plans to join the mobile market later this year after signing a $230 million contract with South Korea's SLD Telecom last year to provide nationwide coverage.

This project is still awaiting a licence from DGPT.

VNPT has forecast that mobile phone users in Vietnam will rise to 2.2 million in 2005. At present there are 1.03 million subscribers to the Vinaphone and Mobiphone networks.
