Dear Elmer:

Well if Vtune is not a compiler, then it can not compile any application and thus what I said is completely true! Shot yourself in the foot that time!

If you take by what I have heard the Intel C/C++ and Fortran compilers referred to, and I just continued in that practice, you still have yet to come up with any application that proves me wrong. Since you have not, and you apparently can't, then the premise contained in the statement is true, and like many things, it is true until proven otherwise.

You judge others by asking for proof, I now place the burden on you to prove me wrong. Or you can't uphold the high standard you require of others. Isn't that a sorry state of affairs?

Proof requires a real application doing real work. It also requires that the application so compiled actually runs and is deemed good enough for release with the companies reputation on the line. Perhaps my standards are higher than that of the SPEC organization. They are similar to what Tim Wilkins or any other scientist looking at a compiler to produce output that they stake their reputation on. The typical metrics are repeatability (same input yields same output), verifiability (using different method yields the same results within the stated error bounds of each method (usually more than one)), and robustness (minor changes do not cause major changes in output). I have never seen this level of scrutiny of the Intel compilers or heard anyone who did.
