OT....Marc, I'm fortunate enough to live in a part of CA where the AC isn't too much of a necessity in the summer months....the problem as I see it stems from what you witnessed with the old ladies....people are going to be looking to escape the heat by searching for those places that provide any form of cool air, whether it be restaurants, malls, etc....IMHO I expect to see rising prices from these restaurants, mall stores, department stores and such to compensate for their higher utility costs, as well as to capitalize on the increase in "traffic" to their establishments....what this does to our inflationary pressures is anyone's guess.
I also expect a huge influx of tourists into my area and town for the sake of our cooler weather and the available beaches (we call the beachers/boaters from inland the "Fresno Navy" here)....that usually means an increase in real estate traffic for our town, as inlanders look for their piece of the escapist pie....they can bear their 100 degree weeks knowing their weekend is an escape to the 70 degree coast.
Makes for a summer of interesting people watching.

Wes

Note: Great spot on the cook....I'll be doing more home cooking as a result.

OT> Yuck!! Marc! That is a terrible thought. Along those same lines, if you recall heat waves that have crippled some of America's largest cities in years past, you will know that crime skyrocketed with the temperatures. As alarms batteries wear out from prolonged power outages, they become easy pickings. . . and the worst fallout comes with flaring tempers. It's one thing to be standing in line at a deli in NYC and getting upset at someone cutting in line. . . you could just as easily walk away from the situation. But in California, where freeway traffic can get so snarled, it actually gets gridlocked. . .and takes many hours to resolve. . .potentially deadly situations can occur. And you can't just get out of the cab and walk. . . when the nearest exit is 4 miles ahead and traffic is stuck in both directions. . ..as often happens daily on I-55 in O.C. or the 110 in LA. The oppressive heat can bring about a sharp increase in need for emergency services. . . but with all lanes full [and many shoulders, too]. . . there could be scenarios where a routine call could end up tragic.

I will keep in mind your "sweaty cook" imagery. "Hey, waitress. . .I said no salt on the fries. . . .oh, you didn't salt them? . . .then why. . .uh. . ." .. . .BLEHH!!
