The mistake by the media is focusing on "the number" instead of the trend. So I agree with you there.
And I agree that those segments of the media that rely on reporting happy horsehockey (morning TV news shows, for example) are desperate for something positive.
Was it a bear trap? In a bear market like this, there will be sharp rallies from time to time on no news, no justification. So, I don't know about that.
What really makes it stupid for the media to focus on one number, make it the big headline, the top story, is when, two days later, the president says, "I'm concerned that many Americans are unable to find jobs." Bush said that today.
Then they have to report that, too, since all they want is the soundbite, the quick quote, and their job is done.
No thinking required.
The all-time greatest was Ann Compton, former ABC White House correspondent. After Clinton testified that he "did not have sex with that woman," Ann Compton said, "There, the president said it, and I believe him."
She actually said that. On the air. As part of the news story.
Sorry for the rant. Back to finding pictures of central bankers to put on my dart board.
