NorthPoint was ``forced to shut down its DSL (digital subscriber line) network after efforts to secure funding for continued, interim operations failed .... NorthPoint advises its customers to expect network outages and termination of DSL services immediately,'' the company said in a statement released late Wednesday night.

That is why the baby bells (and maybe long distance companies like AT&T, WCOM) and the large wireless carrier stocks may benefit in a big way. Cable stocks that offer high speed internet will benefit as well..maybe another reason to buy cable operators.

I used the Microsoft example before. The death of the dot.coms and the cut backs at the survivors like Yahoo make it so easy for Microsoft to get the best talent and increase R and D when others are suffering. The same logic applies in carriers.

IMHO, that is the theme to look at when investing for the rest of the year in the tech sector.

In that Northpoint example...who will get the DSL business? I bet it is a regional bell operator. If they don't have the network for it now..I bet they can build it out with the cash they carry on their books (not to mention great credit ratings).
