alomex, i bet they amzn has one time write-offs IF they can make the pro forma thing work - which they may not be able to do...

EXCELLENT article w/ ravi suria interview... amzn mentioned in last paragraph of part 2. maybe bezos should have sold paper bags on the internet, dude! ;-)

>>Brett D. Fromson: Let's change gears and talk briefly about a company that you know well, Amazon.com.

Ravi Suria: Amazon is a retailer that was masquerading as a tech company for a number of years. It borrowed too much money. And the money is running out. Unless somebody comes and gives it more, the company will have to go through restructuring in the next 12 months. That doesn't mean it goes out of business. The Web site survives. It's a great asset and it will be a great asset to somebody. It just means that the current capital structure and the current operating model don't work. Their operating model clearly does not work. Why not? Because it doesn't make money. As somebody said the other day, "Anybody who sold one paper bag for a 10-cent profit made more money, a heck of a lot more money, than Amazon has over the past five years." Debtholders will most likely end up owning the company.<<

And this is the reason, ladies and gentlemen, whyAmazon will report "pro forma operating" profits in Q4'2001. Any accountant worth its salt (and with no morals) can fudge away such a small loss for Q4'2001, specially if you add the recent economies made, such as layoffs, closure of a DC and so on.

Alomex,

I understand what you are saying and agree. I do not believe this will happen in this case due to the lack of working capital for Q4. No accounting will fix a lack of product.

I really cannot understand why people like Bezos just can't come out and say well I obviously did not understand retailing, the idea was good but I executed very poorly.
