Thanks for the candid replies to these questions. I think that your success stems from your stop loss protection discipline. I tend to enter shorts only when I am quite confident the stock is near the top of the channel and the expected downside move to the base is at least 20%. As you can imagine, such 20% moves are not very common, hence I am considering modifying my approach.
