Barron's weekly says in its March 26 issue that QLT is a top short pick of analysts Michael Margolies and David Hines of Avalon Research Group, who play detective for clients at hedge funds and mutual funds. The stock currently trades at $20.69 (U.S.). Mr. Margolies notes that the chairman of the Food and Drug Administration panel says the results of QLT's Visudyne therapy are "modest and temporary." "So our view on QLT is that Visudyne therapy ultimately doesn't work," says Mr. Hines. Mr. Margolies says that most research on Wall Street is given away, and everybody gets what they pay for. He notes that Avalon has a minimum charge for its research, and it hopes to get paid more if it does a good job. Over all, from mid-1998 through last December, the average Avalon "sell" dropped 20 per cent, while the average Avalon "buy" gained 55 per cent. Much of Avalon's success is due to its team of internal analysts, former industry people who assimilate data from the intelligence chain, from suppliers, distributors, people who work at companies and headhunters.
