Joe, thanks for the correction, chipset price isn't indeed the real problem. I think cheap "gamer board" as you call it (I would rather call it a cheap workstation board) would have some success among CAD develloppers (say what you want kash and that_crazy_doug rendering is always too long) As for the Gigabit internet, I agree with you there... we're using a 10 base-T BNC net home and it can be very slow moving stuff like CD images, or even 100MB files. I wouldn't mind it being 100x faster:)

Joe: I think the flood of the cheap Gigabit Ethernet network cards is about to happen. 3Com is starting to sell what they call a server version for less than $200, this place has it for $166: pcnation.com The card supports anything from 32 bit 33 MHz PCI all the way to PCI-X. That's pretty cheap. I just got a catalogue from D-Link a couple of days ago. Their Gigabit Ethernet card runs >$350. One thing I was pleasantly surprised by was the price of a "wireless access point" (11Mbps, 802.11b, 52 users): $375. The PC-Card wireless LAN adapters run just over $150, with a PCI version (which is just a PC-Card stuck on a PCI board with a few chips to translate the signals) running $50 more. By the time broadband reaches my parents house, I think I'll set up a wireless LAN for them. -fyo
