The big difference that I can see b/w your two scenarios is the issue of damages. When stock price tanks immediately following a message, you have a quantifiable indication of damages. It is harder to quantify monetary damages when an individual's character has been questioned.

as far as I know, you can't libel an alias

What if you "legalize" an alias by, I'm talking out my hat here, trademarking it or something? At that point wouldn't libeling an alias be similar to libeling "Disney" or "McDonald's"?
