I've got to agree with Michael on the dot.com crash. I was approached by a good number (as I'm sure many here were) to join up. Upon examination, almost NONE had an even coherent business plan. Almost all I examined relied on a shaky economic model that vaguely attempted to capture 'eyeballs' as a revenue stream. Their revenue streams were, for the most part, strictly ad based. And they would spend a huge amount of money towards that end. They seemed to think that turning a profit would be viewed as a negative by the market (maybe they were right?) Anyway, this pyramid scheme HAD to collapse. I do not believe that it was the reason behind the current main street collapse, but it may have provided a psychological 'nudge'. I agree with JDN that the 'main street' collapse we see was created by monetary policy. Strangled in 2000, left to die in 2001.
