It is one things for government to establish a floor below which it will not let citizens fall, or to be, as it were, the insurer of last resort, and another thing take over a whole sector that is largely working. The analogy would be to make housing into a government controlled cartel, replete with provisions to forbid contracts outside of the cartel, rather than subsidize housing for the poor, or provide modest breaks for first time homeowners. Instead of limited, targeted aid, create a monster bureaucracy and distort a major sector of the economy! Sounds like a plan......
