There is also a regular survey asking whether people are employed, unemployed, looking for work, etc., taken, I believe, by the Censu Bureau, and I think it's quarterly. The unemployment claims are, I believe, monthly. You can also take a look at weekly stats on personal income tax withholdings on the IRS website, which isn't direct evidence but you can draw inferences.

You can also get info directly from state websites, e.g. California is very good.
