Dave, Unearned revenues increased last quarter significantly. The booking of the revenues over coming 2 or so years will be what really helps in providing stability in earnings.
If other companies see 2 bad quarters, MSFT may not see any...but when the other companies turn around in their earnings, MSFT's increases in earnings may be somewhat less than one would expect.
The earnings will probably get smoothed out.
That is why I don't expect any profit warning or even reduction in guidance going forward that is any lower than Sherlund's low numbers---$1.75 for this and next year. Only a statement worse than this would cause the stock to drop,IMHO. The chance of them going lower than the Sherlund numbers is pretty slim.
