Yes, Manhattan is probably not a good viewing location. You should pack up the wife and kids and head north for the night. :-)

Thee is so much "light pollution" around me that I would definitely not be able to see anything.

I don't have as much light pollution but I think I was to far south. From what was stated in the first post about this I would have to be at least as far north as Philadelphia to see anything. I don't think it would have been worth driving 4 hours to see pretty light for an hour before heading home.
