Hi Greta,

I like the political yardstick given to you by your parents. It serves well, probably even moreso today than thirty years ago, now that the media has permeated politics and every little political speech can be seen on CNN and C-Span.

About your friend, argh, that is tough. We're in such an interesting time in history, when the confluence of alternative medicine, longer lifespans and the long term effects of environmental pollutants lead to all sorts of brave and crazy behavior on the part of patients. I was speaking to my mother about this yesterday, who, at 63, is experiencing the death of a number of her female friends due to various cancers. Their generation tends to follow standard medical practices, but our seems much more willing to think outside the medical box. Whether or not this will do us any good in the long run remains to be seen. I'm considerably more proactive than my mother was in her forties: exercising regularly, taking supplements, reducing meat consumption. I wonder if any of this will have an effect on my health in the long term, or if it's simply "medical masturbation" on the part of many in our generation.

Boy I'm off on a tangent. <gg>
