The rent in CA is about $2k/month for a family. Consider the mortgage with tax benefit being the rent then. One can live without CSCO shares, but not without a roof. Plus most tech jobs are created in CA, most foreign engineers (H1B visa) are in CA and more foreign grad students are coming out of college. To them, CA is more attractive than Iowa. I do not think a $500k property will only be worth $1M in 30 years in this state.

CA's real estate market was corrected once in the 80s due to S&L and defence cut. Now it's just getting back in line thanks to the up-ward correction in the past 3 years.

Disclaimer: bought SDLI with low interest rate credit card checks, cashed out after JDSU merger, bought rental property, plan to do it again once Nasdaq finds a floor. It may not be telecom stocks leading the way this time around.
