It works both ways...a - times a - is a positive and a negative times a positive is a negative. Here's another way to do it.

In an empty cell, type -1.
Select the cell, and click Copy on the Edit menu.
Now select the cells containing the values you want to change.
On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
Under Paste, click Values and under Operation, click multiply.
Click OK.
All the numbers change from positive to negative, or vice versa
