The biggest issue with doing this kind of tech on a PC isn't processing power, it's fault tolerance. HP and Sun own the medical because they are far more reliable when you have computers handling life support and diagnostic procedures.

Digital was a big player, as was Data General.

It was as much about fault tolerance as it was relationships. Medical equipment needs rigorous testing and certification.

The PC vendors didn't really play in this space - selling direct and building relationships were definitely not part of the early PC sales model. The bigger companies that had PCs, IBM in particular - they historically wouldn't cannibalize one part of their business for another, so they were less of a factor.

And lastly, medical equipment buyers need steady trips to dinner and bars, it would seem. One or two vendors seemed to have sales forces that excelled at recognizing this.
