<<We'll just switch to Linux>>

Well, personally I like Unix (Solaris, AIX, Linux, whatever flavor). I spent the last 10 years of my career developing C/C++ applications for chip design, on IBM and Sun Unix boxes. I install the MKS toolkit on all my Windows PC's so I can type unix stuff on the command line and have it work.

If you only need Netscape and word processing, maybe Linux is viable as a consumer solution. But with about a 500-to-1 advantage in available applications, most consumers have no practical alternative to Windows.

no games for Linux
no TurboTax for Linux
no Quicken for Linux
limited support for exotic hardware in Linux
etc etc

Granted, in most categories there are SOME apps available, but you will find they are much inferior to the best Windows products. PC operating systems are, unfortunately, a natural monopoly because of economies of scale for the app developers.

Macs are in a slightly better situation for availability of apps, but not enough.
