Europe fights livestock crisis

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the UK has led to the slaughter of thousands of animals and brought the country's livestock industry to a standstill. The EU banned British exports of animals, meat and milk, and slaughters were begun on the continent. But the disease -- which is highly contagious among animals but harmless to humans -- has crossed the English Channel and threatens to spread across Europe.
