Online Exclusive, Mar 28 2001

Telstra International was created to will manage Telstra’s Asia-Pacific interests and direct its offshore growth strategy.
Chief executive officer Ziggy Switkowski said the head office for Telstra International would be in Hong Kong to ensure the new group was strongly connected to the fast growing Asian markets, and to its partners.

Telstra OnAir group managing director, Dick Simpson, has been appointed to lead the new business unit and will take up the position of President, Telstra International.

Telstra International will incorporate ventures in Vietnam, India, Singapore, New Zealand, Japan and Sri Lanka as well as the recently-established joint ventures with Pacific Century CyberWorks. The joint ventures with PCCW include Reach, the Regional Wireless Company and the Internet Data Centre Company.

“Telstra International is the obvious next step in developing our growth opportunities which will come from wireless, data and Internet in the growing economies of the Asia-Pacific region,” Switkowski says.

Simpson, whose appointment is effective immediately, has experience in direct operations and international joint ventures in Europe and Asia. He has also been responsible for the completion of the negotiations with PCCW and leadership of Telstra’s domestic mobiles business.

Switkowski said Telstra chose Hong Kong for the head office of Telstra International because of its important location within China. It provides ready access to north and south Asia and good communications that will allow the group to network extensively through the region.

“Telstra International will also provide support for Telstra’s main China office in Beijing which is pursuing new commercial relationships and providing technical advice in support of Beijing’s 2008 Olympic Games bid,” Switkowski says. “Telstra has established itself as Australia’s largest and most profitable company with a depth of operational, marketing and technical skills. This expertise will be the springboard for Telstra to become a valuable business partner and a leading communications and information services provider in the markets throughout Asia.”
