For us beginners, the lesson of fully invested on margin is too painful. I am still seeing that kind of confident investors on Yahoo boards. I have also seen the pains of some investors on the SI AMES board, having margin calls again and again.

Margin investment like option investments, has to be a short term bet. It is gambling and luck is not on your side. Because margin and options are known to the people who handle your account, their knowledge put you at risk. Believe me, you never had a chance 99% of the time.

Both margin investment and options are for the poor people. Try to go the opposite way of looking at investment for the long term; you will find compounded gains is the goal. 5 year slowly invest more and more on a good investment is a lot less risky, because you can stop when it does not pan out. 30 years later you will have a nice nest egg.

Good luck on all your investments. Avoid being taken out by your friendly broker.
