Your last point is a really interesting one, because I guess we will discover if there ARE certain ineluctable repeating patterns...that would be interesting to know. I.E. is there order in chaos? It's either true of all of life or none. I guess the point with the programs is, if they can make inference engines that can see a pattern among certain setups, then the humans/banks will buy/sell to create those triggers--

I'd rather it was chaos, I think! :-)

Teresa, great answer but would like ta add that some of those programs are tuned or tune themselves to changes to market swings or trends.

One of my friends at an very substantial hedge fund does just that. He is always short and long around 600 or so stocks, and various stocks are added or eliminated from time to time. It is also easy to see it on NASDAQ trading wen continuous small trades of 100 shares are traded without change in price those trades are mostly computerized trades and not always the small investor.
