Paul,

Looks like RAMBUS is going to outsell DDR by a long shot this year

You are making an implicit proof. Intel tied P4 exclusively to RDRAM. Each P4 system sells with RDRAM. Therefore RDRAM was a good idea.

Once Intel straightens the P4 situation out, the contorted logic doesn't work anymore.

Re: Looks like RAMBUS is going to outsell DDR by a long shot this year.

P4 is switching to SDRAM/DDR as it ramps and nothing else uses any significant quantity of RDRAM.

Athlon and PIII are already moving to DDR (though it doesn't do much for PIII's 133MHZ FSB). Long shot was a good term to use.

Q1 and Q2 of this year were RDRAM's best shot - too bad those are looking like two of the worst quarters for new technologies in quite a while. By Q3, when things may (or may not) be looking up, P4 will be available with SDRAM (which will truncate the RDRAM ramp) and Athlon will be almost all DDR. P4 itself may be shipping with DDR as early as Q4, and nearly half of all this year's P4 sales will likely take place in Q4.
