The voice quality is poor, the cost of operating the satellites is high, even if the cost of BUYING them was peanuts. There is no way that Iridium can compete on an operating cost basis with G*. There is also no way that Iridium can send data reliably. The only tragedy here is that a government agency is in effect subsidizing a bankrupt operation in competition with a genuine, viable business, which could end up destroying the viable business.
