Thanks for correcting me. The files need to be opened for the memory loss to occur, and it doesn't matter what software is doing the opening. At first I thought it was a Perl leak, but I later realized that it happened any time lots of files were opened.

I consider this to be a catastrophic bug, because it forces reboot every few hours if you actually try to use the computer as a computer.
