Ok, I've seen this argument that 'gun ownership lowers crime rates', and I'd like to delve into that a little. I'm seeing some data that disputes that, and possibly even points in the other direction. I do not draw absolute conclusions from this data, merely present as a counter to the assumption on this thread.

In 1999, the top 10 states in crime rate were:

Florida 6205.5 per 100,000
N Mexico 5962.1
Arizona 5896.5
Louisiana 5746.8
S Carolina 5324.4
Washington 5255.5
N Carolina 5175.4
Georgia 5148.5
Texas 5031.8
Oregon 5002.0

The majority of these states are in the South, and the rest in the northeast and southwest. Although I cannot find figures that break gun ownership out by state, I would assume that the South leads the way, with states like Arizona and Oregon also high on the list. Does anyone have this sort of data?

Btw: where does 'liberal, urban, decadent' California stand? 30th out of 50.

Data from FBI "Uniform Crime Report" 1999.
