The comparison with the same week last year, which has showed a minus in most of weeks since the second week of February, turned to a plus for the first time in three weeks. According to a survey by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 volume retailers of household electric appliances, PC sales in the second week of March (March 5-11, 2001) increased 6.6 percent in volume and 7.1 percent in value. Compared with same week a year ago, (March 6-12, 2000), sales increased by 0.2 percent in volume and decreased by 3.5 percent in value. The average retail price increased 796 yen from the previous week's 191,165 yen to 191,961 yen. (123.14 yen = US$1) Compared with the same week a year ago, PC sales showed as much as a 14.3 percent decline in value in the fourth week of February, but the difference shrunk to a 3.5 percent decline in the second week of March. Although the growth of the PC market still depends on sales of notebook PCs, Japan's spring PC sales are likely to recover.
