PC Sales in February Register First Negative Y-O-Y Growth in 3 Years
April 2, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Sales of personal computers in the spring season are weak, with Japan's unit-based PC sales in February declining from the same month a year earlier for the first time since March 1998, a Nikkei Market Access survey said.

Nikkei Market Access announced the results of a survey of PC sales in February 2001. It complied the results based on data provided by GfK Japan Ltd. In terms of units, the February sales declined 16.0 percent from the previous month.

Sales grew in February 2000 and February 1999, from a month earlier. Compared with the 18.1 percent increase on a year-on-year basis recorded in January 2001, sales in February fell by 3.2 percent.

Also, examining the sales by type, notebook PCs (in units) maintained an increase of 9.8 percent compared with the same month of the previous year, while desktop PCs showed a double-digit decline of 15.1 percent.

GfK Japan, an information service company, handles POS data from 3,200 discount home-electrical appliance stores.

About a year ago, at the beginning of 2000, demand for PCs rose, due to Y2K problems. Accordingly, January-March 2000 PC sales resulted in an explosive growth of around 90 percent from the same period in 1999.

In order to avoid considering the unusual growth resulting from the Y2K problem, compared with the figures in 1999, sales in February 2001 showed an increase of 83.8 percent, maintaining almost the same as high level as in December 2000. However, compared with January 2001, February sales showed a significant slowdown.

The average sales price increased by 3,647 yen to 190,318 yen. The average price of a desktop PC, in particular, increased by 15,000 yen, the largest increase recorded since the survey started in 1998. (123.14 yen = US$1)
