I work in this space, and my company is regularly asked to evaluate iPlanet against WebLogic and WebSphere, so Sun is in the running, though it is running third. All our current jobs use Weblogic.

I think BEA-the-company is very well positioned, if it doesn't drop the ball. But I think BEA-the-stock is still double fair value, at least.

Sun isn't a competitive threat in the space. It really boils down to BEA or IBM and BEA leads the space.

I had a beer with the head of Sun's Business Development department. He came to speak to our class yesterday.

There was no hesitation when I brought up the IPlanet bundling with server thing. Not gonna happen. But think about it as well. It as very analogous to say INTEL in 1991 suddenly deciding to bundle their own operating system with their chips instead of using Windows. Wonder how many chips they would have sold had that been the case? Weblogic sells Sun servers. IPlanet does not - or at least not nearly as well.
