Here’s something else that might explain USU’s recent price action - what’s happening with the price of uranium on the spot market. Ux SWU spot prices had been going down and languishing since ‘97. Since January it’s been spiking up, and last week increased 6% from previous week. Check out the SWU price graph at this link:

Different factors are affecting the price of enrichment services. Both spot and long-term SWU prices in the U.S. are now above $90/SWU and are expected to continue to rise. Uncertainty over the outcome of USEC Inc.'s trade case against European enrichers Urenco and Eurodif is helping to boost the enrichment services price. And that price rise is also helping USEC's stock. - Washington (NuclearFuel)--6March2001

Interesting article from Chicago Tribune:

Rather than mothballing 40-year-old plants as had been anticipated, owners of 33 nuclear reactors … are seeking 20-year license renewals from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Nationwide, five reactors already have been relicensed.

Utilities, meanwhile, are bidding against one another to buy aging nuclear power plants once widely viewed as white elephants … And Exelon, which owns the nation's largest nuclear fleet, is even proposing the construction of new nuclear plants in the U.S. for the first time in decades …
