In a bearish note on the semiconductor sector, Niles said, "we believe semiconductor fundamentals in early 2001 are much worse than in 1996."
He's forecasting revenue for the industry to be down 18-20 percent in 2001
analyst Dan Niles said revenue from chip sales are likely to fall 10 percent from the first quarter to the second quarter. Full-year semiconductor sales may fall as much as 20 percent from 2000, which would make 2001 the worst year ever for the industry.

He cut his profit forecasts for this year and next for Intel and Texas Instruments.

Shares of Texas Instruments, whose chips power two-thirds of the world's cell phones, hadn't traded on Instinet. Intel Corp., the biggest maker of personal computer microprocessors, rose 8 cents to $23.70.
