No, the most profound rule in soccer is the advantage rule. More refs get cursed by more parents on this one.

DMA the offside rule is very simple. If you have the ball you can go straight to the goal without any problem. If you wish to pass the ball to someone else on your team at the exact moment that you pass the ball no player on your team can be ahead of the last defender on the other team.
Looking below x is a defender on your opponent's team. You are y2 and your teammate is y. That is not offside. However reverse y and x and it is offside.

X
Y

Y2

the offside rule, Well fisrt there is no Soccer offside rule. In Soccer you play the game according to the Laws of Soccer.

So to lay down the Law, Law 11 that's XI that's Offside.

if in the opinion of the ref a player in an offside position attempts to use that position to advantage at the time of a forward pass there is an offside foul.

offside position.
offside position is determined by two virtual(imaginary) lines that I will define.
1. A line exist thru the ball and parallel to the goal line.
2. A line exists thru the 2nd closest defender to the goal line and that line is also parallel to the goal line.

Offside position occurs when an attacking player is forward of the ball line and forward of the 2nd closest defender line.

You have no idea of how many soccer refs I have had to explain that to over and over and over again.

So,
1. was there offside position.
2. Was a forward pass made. well it has to be a forward pass as a player in offside position is forward of the ball.

3. Did the player in offside position seek to take advantage.

offside = 1 and 2 and 3 (IN THE OPINION OF THE REF)

Damn I can hear you snoring from here.

Anyway here how it explained drblank.com
