Rick, here's a link to NAPM data going back to 1948. Maybe it can give us some clues.- Message 15598059

I looked at the 1973-74 period, since that seems to be the most comparable in terms of market drop magnitude. Found 2 instances where the NAPM turned up for 2-4 months, only to hit new lows later. The market eventually bottomed in late september of 1974, 3 months before the NAPM bottomed.

That is almost always the case. The market will bottom ahead of the economy- It is a leading indicator. Since we have no market bottom in place, the NAPM is likely to head lower in the future, IMHO.
