I'll talk about The Messenger, but first give a chance to those who haven't seen it to move to the next response. I hate it when someone talks about a movie I want to see but haven't.

Joan believes that she is getting messages from God. God is telling her that he is on her side, the side of France, against the infidel English. She convinces the king of France that she is a messenger from God, her to do His righteous work. She whips the French into a religious fury, and leads them into bloody battles with much pain, loss of life, and gratuitous Hollywood gore.

She is, of course, captured and put on trial for heresy. After all, the English also think THEY are on the side of God; didn't THEIR priests tell them that? So, she must be heretical. Of course she is, and promptly burnt at the stake.

The twist is the appearance of the confessor priest played by Dustin Hoffman. Through a series of encounters with him, she comes to realize that she has had some sort visions, but how did she interpret them as messages from God? What led her to believe that He would want her to lead some bloody war, when His teachings were clearly against it? She saw what she wanted to see, and interpreted the 'signs' incorrectly. Indeed, at the end, she looks back on the signs, and sees that she has completely misinterpreted them. Instead of bringing the Word, she was in fact heretical. In the final scenes, she asks and receives forgiveness for his sins.

I believe that the anti-gay forces will someday face this same dilemma. Whether in this life or the next, they will see the light; that judgement of their fellow man is wrong; that intolerance and hatred are not 'family values'; that they have misinterpreted the signs of God.

The last company I worked for extended medical benefits to domestic partners. I was proud to work for such an ethical company. I hope that more companies see the light.
