If a parent limits their children from going to the library because of fear of porn being shown to them. Then it would be a travesty.

Yes, it would.

Parents commit lots of travesties. They abuse substances when pregnant. They smoke in the home. They don't teach kids manners. They park them in front of the TV rather than stimulating them. I could go on. Parents can be stupid, indifferent, self obsessed, childish, etc. Keeping one's kid away from a library on the off chance the kid could encounter porn would, indeed, be a travesty. But parents are free to make all kinds of stupid choices for their children as for themselves. The best we can do is try to educate.

Karen, are you seriously trying to now argue the position that a person might not be able to obtain legitimate information he/she needs via the internet with filtering software?

No, I'm not trying to NOW argue it. I've been arguing it from the top of our discussion. You haven't been paying attention. Here's a clip from my first post to you on this subject:

Part of the problem is with the filters, which don't work all that well. An adult should be able to research breast cancer on the internet in a public library. Filters can't seem to make fine distinctions. I encountered my employer's filter quite innocently recently when my search for a dictionary turned up a dictionary of sexual slang. Lights flashing. IP address recorded. Ouch. Perhaps soon the filters will be smart enough to know smut when they see it and be better able to protect children while allowing legitimate research.

Here's the point clipped from the article YOU posted earlier today:

usnews.com

<<Critics also charge that filtering software is flawed. They point to imperfect services that have blocked sites about human biology, birth control, even a site about the Mars Explorer (the filter read "MarSEXplorer"). What's more, some porn sites still get through. >>

One of the very best uses for the internet is research on health issues. Access to that information can make the difference between life and death and it should be available.
