OT Bernard:

I traded short term in 1999, and like many of us, made a tremendous amount of money. It put me easily in the 39% tax bracket, which combined with 10% CA income tax, placed my total income tax burden close to 50%. I decided that the risks I was taking did not justify the tremendous tax burden resulting. (Of course your whole point is to reduce those downside risks in the first place. :) )

At that point, I decided to try my hand at LT investing in new econ stocks. LOL

However, in 2000, i did make two good decisions: a cash purchase of a second home in 01/00 and taking 50% of my money off the table in 5/00 for cash equivalent investments. Unfortunately, that still left me with an enormous exposure to this ravaging bear market.

The problem is that our tax system is structured in a way that is out of synch with the volatile stock market (and even more so with hyper-volatile new econ sectors like biotech).

At any rate, it sounds like you are weathering this horrible market better than i.

Continued good luck.

Rob
